Battle of the Candles

My children are no longer in diapers since they are 4, 7, and 8, but for the greater part of the past nine years, I have had little ones rocking diapers. Thus, candles long ago became a necessity in our house during that time, and I know you other mamas out there can relate!

Like coffee mugs, I collect candles. At any given time, my stovetop has a plethora of candle options so I can pick and choose - and I am rather picky about what candles make it into my collection.

I have tried many over the years - and I just don’t like wimpy candles (see above reason for needing candles the last years). In my opinion, a candle needs to have an aggressive throw to be worth the money. (For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a candle’s throw means how much of a scent it gives off when lit.) I am super picky when it comes to my candles because so many have fallen short over the years and haven’t impressed me.

Simply put, I come back year after year after year to Bath & Body Works Candles - not all of their candle throws are equal - but you generally get the most bang for your buck if you want your house to actually smell like the candle you purchased. My absolute go to, must have ten of these at the holiday season is Fresh Balsam. Seriously, go grab yourself some - you will thank me later since your entire house will smell like a Christmas tree farm. Every single person who walks into my house when I have this candle lit asks me what it is and why my house smells so good.

My love of Christmas candles did lead me recently to try out the Hearth & Hand Sugared Birch Candle from Target’s Magnolia Collection since I saw several fellow bloggers raving about it. I needed to see if this could compare to my treasured Fresh Balsam, so it was time for a little battle of the candles.

The packaging is simplistic and chic, and different sizes are available, which is nice. When you smell the Sugared Birch Candle in the store, it smells amazing - when you get it home and light it, it is a wimp and not worth the money unless you want to be standing over it to smell anything. Sorry Joanna, but I wouldn’t waste your money on this.

You guys, I’ve tried oodles and oodles of candles over the years, and I’m telling you - stick with the tried and true Bath & Body Works Candles because they always come out as the clear winner in my battles of the candles. The three wicks will burn for hours on end with a beautiful throw and will absolutely give you the most value for your dollar when it comes to candles.

I have a feeling that there will be a mega sale at Bath & Body Works this weekend, so get yourself a Fresh Balsam Candle (or ten!) and enjoy the holidays with a home bathed in Christmas goodness!
